About Cape Air

Cape Air is based in Hyannis, Massachusetts. When it first started operations, it was mainly about offering flights between Boston and Provincetown. But Cape Air extended its operations across New England when it merged with Nantucket Airlines, and by the late 1990s they were flying to Florida and the Caribbean.

Today, it maintains a fleet of 108 planes flying to 36 cities spread mostly across the eastern US. These areas include the Northeast, Cape Cod & the Islands, the Midwest, Eastern Montana, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and British Virgin Islands.

Reasons to Fly Cape Air

Keep in mind that most Cape Air planes are small. While that may come with fewer amenities, it also offers some benefits.

Great for New England Residents and Visitors

As the airline is mostly centered around the Northeast, it’s best for those who are traveling to and from New England. Cape Air offers year-round flights to the cities there, so that means it’s easier to vacation or go back home to New England at any time of the year.

Extended Destinations

You can also use Cape Air if you’re a New Englander and then you’re planning a vacation nearby. You can visit St. Louis, or perhaps spend some time in Montana. Or you can holiday in Puerto Rico, or just get to San Juan from where you can visit any part of the Caribbean.

Fun Flying

A lot of passengers say that unlike with most of the other airlines, it’s a lot more fun flying with Cape Air. With small planes and maybe 9 seats altogether, you’ll have a great view outside the plane regardless of where you’re sitting. In fact, you may just be invited to sit on the copilot’s seat!

Keep in mind that Cape Air basically flies to holiday spots, so the grounds below generally offer picturesque views.

Quick and Easy

With so few passengers, the boarding and deplaning processes don’t take too long at all. The flight schedules are generally very convenient. Cape Air also has ticket and baggage agreements with most of the major airlines, so you still enjoy smooth connections and very reasonable rates.

It’s almost like taking a bus, except it’s better, a lot more fun, and with much better views.

Cape Air Baggage Fees and Policies

For Carry-On

Each passenger is allowed to bring in 1 personal item and 1 carry-on bag. Both these items should be lightweight. Though Cape Air doesn’t list a specific weight limit for these items, it’s recommended that they don’t weigh too heavy. If they’re too heavy for you to lift comfortably to store in an overhead cabin, then it may be overweight.

There are size limits, though, indicated in total liner inches. That’s when you add up the total inches for the length, width, and height of the item.

For the personal item, it’s a maximum of 36 linear inches, while it’s 45 inches for the carry-on bag. However, some planes do not feature overhead bins, and that means the items should be stored under the seat in front of you. That’s only possible if these items are no bigger than 12 by 6 by 8 inches. If your item is larger and won’t fit under a seat, then either you just carry it with you or a Cape Air representative will store the item for you.

If you’re flying with an infant, you can add a diaper bag to your carry-on allowance. You can also check the bay’s car seat and stroller, free of charge.

For Checked Baggage

Your checked bags should not be bigger than 62 linear inches, and they should not be heavier than 50 pounds. You can have up to 3 checked bags on the flight, although that depends on the space availability.

On the Cape Air C208A seaplane, the checked bag can weigh up to 20 pounds at the most, and it won’t cost you.

For the first checked bag on most flights, the first checked bag will cost $30. But it’s $110 if it’s more than 50 pounds. The 2nd checked bag costs $40, but it’s $120 if it’s overweight. The 3rd checked bag costs $80, and $160 if overweight.

The baggage may not be accepted if it’s heavier than 70 pounds.
