About Spirit Airlines

In recent years, the dominance of the top major airlines has been contested by a slew of rivals that offer much lower costs to potential passengers. One of these airlines is Spirit Airlines, which only started up in the early 1990s.

Today, it’s the 8th largest passenger airline in North America, and it’s the largest airline among the carriers that offer super-low prices for passengers. There are current negotiations that may have JetBlue acquiring Spirit Airlines for $3.8 billion, but the deal hasn’t been finalized just yet.

Top Reasons to Fly Spirit

Low Airfares

The airfares at Spirit are extremely affordable. What that means is that you and your family now have a better chance of flying regularly. And if you have the Spirit MasterCard, you can enjoy a wide range of rewards. But sometimes, the fares are just so low that it really makes sense to just pay for the total airfare in cash.

Just keep in mind that with low airfares also come rather reduced comfort levels when flying. Also, you’ll have to pay extra for perks aboard. The good news is that you don’t have to pay for perks you don’t want.

Great Upgrade Options

The seats at Spirit are rather smaller than average, which isn’t good news for US adults. After all, the CDC has noted that more than ⅔ of the adult population is either overweight or obese. But if you need a larger seat, you can opt for their Big Front Seat. This only costs an extra $50, but that fee would have probably been higher with many other airlines.

Spirit is also taking serious measures to improve passenger comfort during the flight. They’re aiming to boost the cushion comfort level and the recline settings. A full-size tray table is also coming up soon.

Lower Chances of Delays

Despite the super low airfare prices, Spirit still runs a professional service. It’s very rare for a flight to get cancelled, or even delayed for a significantly log time.

The fact that Spirit also charges more for baggage and carry-ons means that lots of passengers actually travel light. And that means people board and exit the plane much more quickly.

Spirit Airlines Baggage Fees and Policies

Prices depend greatly on whether you’re a member of the Spirit Saver$ Club, and at which point you pay for your baggage. It also matters on which flight you’re on. The best way to make sure is to find the Spirit baggage calculator online so you know exactly what you’re paying.

For Carry-Ons

If you’re paying during the booking process, the standard fee will be within the range of $35 to $43. But as a member of the Spirit Saver$ Club, that’s reduced to $28 to $36.

If you’re paying during the or right before the online check-in, the fee becomes $45 to $53, with a range of $38 to $46 for SSC members.

Pay at the airport reservation desk, and it’s $55 to $71. And at the gate, it’s $65 to $76.

For your personal item, it must not be larger than 18 by 14 by 8 inches. For the standard carry-on bag, the limits are 22 by 18 by 10 inches.

Baby formula and breast pumps are okay, and they don’t count as part of your carry-on limit. Spirit will check your baby’s car seat and stroller at the ticket counter or gate, and you’ll get the stroller right after you leave the plane.

For Checked Baggage

All checked bags must have dimensions that total no more than 62 inches (length, width, height). And each bag cannot weigh more than 40 pounds.

Again, the fees depend on whether you’re an SSC member, where you’re paying for your checked baggage, the route of your flight, and your travel date. Also, the fees will depend on how many bags you have checked.

Fees for the first bag can range from $30 to $70, with the 3rd through 5th bags costing you $80 to $100 each.

If the bags are overweight, the fees go higher. It’s $50 for bags up to 50 pounds and $75 for up to 100 pounds. Bags that are too large will also cost you more. Up to 80 total linear inches, it will cost $100. Special items that are even bigger can cost up to $150.
