About Swoop Airlines

Swoop is WestJet’s Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier meant to rival Flair Airlines. It only began in 2018, and its operating bases are in Abbotsford, Edmonton, Hamilton (Ontario), Toronto-Pearson, and Winnipeg. It maintains a fleet of 13 Boeing 737s, flying to 32 destinations.

The destinations are mostly across North America and the Caribbean. Swoop is all about point-to-point flights, so they don’t offer connecting flights.

Why Fly Swoop?

There are plenty of good reasons:

Direct Flights

There are no connecting flights. Basically, you get to point A to point B straight on, reducing the likelihood of delays.

Extremely Low Seat Prices

These prices are ridiculously low, since the pricing doesn’t assume that you want extra amenities. If you want more, you just pay more. But if you don’t want the extras, you can really get the price down.

The cheapest seats start from $10, and that increases to $20 for longer flights. You can get a seat with extra legroom for $20.

Reasonable Prices for Amenities

There’s Wi-Fi if you want, with several available packages on board. The inflight internet passes can cost $6 to $26, so it’s not as if they’re overcharging you.

Food and snack options can cost about $3 or so. Non-alcoholic beverages can cost from $1.50 to $3.50, with alcoholic beverages costing from $6 to $9.

You can get a bottle of water for $3.50 as well, though you can always bring your own water bottle. That way, you can fill up right before you get on the plane.

Great Menu

The menu options are quite diverse, so you have plenty of choices. You have little snacks such as Kit-Kat, Pringles, and the Bad Monkey salt and butter chips. For big snacks, you have 5 options including beef jerky, chicken noodles, and traditional hummus with breadsticks.

We counted 6 different sodas, along with orange and apple juice. Or you can try Mott’s Clamato. You can get a cup of coffee or tea (English breakfast, peppermint, or green tea). All these drinks cost less than $3.

Swoop Airlines Baggage Fees

For Carry-On

Each passenger can bring in a personal item for free, usually a briefcase, laptop bag, purse, or even a small backpack. It just has to measure no larger than 16 by 6 by 13 inches.

For a fee, you can also bring a single carry-on bag. This must not be bigger than 21 by 9 by 19 inches. You pay the least during the online booking, and you pay more for all bags at check-in. The highest fees are when you pay at the airport. During the peak summer and peak winter seasons, the prices for carry-on bags also increase by another $2.

All prices quoted here are in Canadian dollars. For Swoop flights that originate from the US, prices are in US dollars.

The Carry-on pricing also depends on how many kilometers are involved with your flight. A carry-on bag for a short flight (less than 1,000 km) will cost $42 (when you pay during the online booking) to $63 (when you pay at the airport). It’s $50 to $80.50 for distances up to 3,000 km, and $60 to $90.40 for long-distance flights greater than 3,000 km.

For Checked Baggage

You’re allowed to bring along up to 4 checked bags, with standard fees for bags within the size and weight limits. The bag shouldn’t not measure more than 62 total linear inches (adding the inches for length, width, and height) and weigh more than 50 pounds.

Again, the prices will depend on when you pay for the checked baggage, and on the length of the flight.

  • For short distances, the 1st bag will can cost $42 to $63. It’s $50 to $80.50 for medium distances and $60 to $90.40 for long-distance flights.
  • For short distances, the 2nd bag will can cost $63 to $84. It’s $70 to $103.50 for medium distances and $80 to $113 for long-distance flights.
  • For short distances, the 3rd and 4th bags will can cost $94.50 to $115.50. It’s $100 to $138 for medium distances and $110 to $146.90 for long-distance flights.

Oversized and overweight bags will add another $105 to $115. Checked bags cannot be larger than 80 total linear inches or heavier than 100 pounds.
