About Contour Airlines

Contour Airlines is a regional carrier based in Tennessee. It’s very new, having started operations only in 2016. It maintains a fleet of just 13 planes, flying to 13 destinations only. They do partner with American Airlines on some routes.

Still, their flights are available in Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, New York state, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

Benefits to Flying Contour Air

Contour Air isn’t exactly famous, but that obscurity offers passengers some benefits.

Seat Availability

This is a nice advantage, as you can almost always find a seat on the flight. That means you generally don’t have problems with overbookings. And with fewer people, boarding and deplaning is a much more efficient process.

Really Quick Boarding

It’s very easy to complete the entire boarding experience.

Start with arriving at the airport. You don’t know which terminal that Contour uses? Just do a quick Google search, and you’ll find that terminal. Get inside the airport, and you’ll also see plenty of signs directing you to the Contour check-in counter.

Things go faster if you print your boarding pass online, but even if you don’t, it’s not really an issue. You generally find 2 check-in desks, where the agents are friendly. Check-in is done in just a matter of minutes. Contour also participates in TSA PreCheck, so the security check is also much faster.

After that, it’s a short tram ride to the lounge. Then you get to the gate for boarding, and you’re done.

You can arrive 20 minutes before your flight and you won’t have a problem. In fact, some have arrived just 10 minutes departure and it was all hassle-free.

Spacious Cabin

Contour will usually have you on an E145 plane, which is designed for 50 seats. But when you enter the plane, you’ll only find 30 seats. That makes the space feel a lot roomier.

You have 10 rows, with a 2+1 seat configuration. That means the walking aisle sets 2 seats on one side, and 1 seat on the other side. This eliminates the annoyance of being in the middle seat.

Nice Legroom

The seats are 18 inches wide, and they offer 36 inches of pitch. That means you have 3 feet of space between the edge of your seat and the seat in front of you. That results in plenty of legroom.

It’s even better on Row 8, which is the Exit Row. You get 41 inches of pitch, so this is great for taller passengers.

Perhaps the best seats for legroom are the seats on Row 1. With no seats in front, you basically have infinite legroom.

3 Free Bags

You don’t pay for your carry-on bag and personal item, and the 1st checked bag is free. And even when you pay for checked baggage, the fees are very cheap.

Contour Airlines Baggage Fees and Policies

The following policies and fees are for Contour Airlines only. If you’re connecting to an American Airlines flight, then you may also have to conform to AA baggage policies.

For Carry-On

As a passenger, you’re allowed 1 personal item, which should fit under the seat in front of you. Usually, this is a briefcase or purse, or even a small backpack.

Carry-on bags are also free of charge. They can be bigger, though it has to fit inside the overhead bin. It shouldn’t be larger than 22 by 14 by 9 inches, and it can’t be heavier than 30 pounds. Exceeding these limits means the bags will have to be checked instead.

For Checked Baggage

You’re also allowed to bring in 1 piece of checked baggage for free. You can have up to 4 checked bags, though you have to pay $25 for the 2nd bag onwards.

The bag should not weigh more than 50 pounds. Each bag that exceeds the 50-pound weight limit adds another $25 to the total fee. The ultimate maximum weight limit is 99 pounds. Bags that are 100 pounds or heavier won’t be accepted.

The size limit for all these bags is 30 by 15 by 45 inches. Larger bags won’t be accepted.

For Sports Equipment

Each piece of equipment costs $35, and should not weigh more than 50 pounds. Heavier pieces add another $25 each to the fees, and these pieces cannot weigh more than 99 pounds.
